THEY TRULY SHOW THE PASSION AND ENERGY THEY BRING TO THEIR MUSIC.
Do it right: It's not expensive to do, and it's about revealing ALL the emotions of a live performance.
DOING IT WRONG
Many bad live recordings are done with console direct out feeds from the monitor or FOH board, and maybe a few mixed in live mics if you are lucky.
These direct outs can have EQ and compression on them that are done for your live club mix. You don't want that stuff recorded. It screws up the ability to mix it later where you want all your emotions to come through.
IT TRULY LIMITS THE ABILITY TO CAPTURE YOUR LIVE SHOW.
DOING IT RIGHT
We record with no direct out signals from the monitor or FOH board by using great mic-pres and mics on all individual channels ourselves. We work with the live sound person beforehand to make a true split of the signal so what we get is pure. What you get is clean and represents the true sound of what you do on-stage and from the audience.
That's when you get a great Live Show Mix.
